Chapter 59
Chapter59 How Could She Treat Me This Way
"Mom, my teddy bear dropped." A little girl's voice rose as she and her mother walked past Rosie.
Right by the crosswalk, the plush toy rolled to Rosie's feet. With a sharp glare, she kicked it away, stomping the ground in a fury as if her rage could crack the pavement itself.
"That bitch! Go to hell!" she hissed.
Alarm flashed across the mother's face. She quickly cupped her daughter's mouth, scooped her up, and rushed off to the side, unwilling to risk a scene with a woman who clearly looked unhinged.
The rest of the onlookers didn't dare linger either. One by one, they slipped away, pretending not to have seen anything at all.
By the time Rosie's outburst burned out, Miriam had already disappeared.
"Mr. Curtis, Miss Curtis, I think there's a car trailing us," the driver said after a few minutes on the road.He kept checking the rearview mirror, noting the vehicle's careful distance. Marissa lifted her gaze to the mirror. The car didn't belong to Theodore's assistant. Could it be Rosie and Miriam?
"Drive faster," Marissa said, her voice steady but firm.
Without hesitation, the driver pressed harder on the gas. The car surged forward, the hum of the engine deepening as he drove faster for several minutes before subtly easing off. Behind them, the trailing vehicle mirrored every move, never straying too far nor too close.
"Could it be enemies?" Marissa asked, her brow furrowing. Though she wasn't deeply familiar with the Curtis family's affairs, she knew that families of great wealth always had those who envied them.
"Let it be," Marc said, his tone calm as his eyes flicked toward the mirror.
"Whoever they are, they're bold," Marissa said, a faint smile tugging at her lips. "Going after the Curtis family in Ozreka takes real nerve."
"Get rid of them," Marc said.
At once, the driver picked up speed again. His hands were steady on the wheel, every turn sharp and precise-a display of practiced control that would impress even the most seasoned driver.Although the other car tried to keep up, it couldn't match his skill. Within moments, the pursuers were nothing more than distant headlights swallowed by the night.
Elsewhere, at the Fletcher family's villa.
A shadow fell over Evelina's expression. She recognized Jenna's voice in the background during the call Myrna made to Marissa.
Jenna was at Bryson's side in the hospital, which could only mean one thing-Marissa was there too and had crossed paths with them.
That despicable woman!
How on earth did she discover that Bryson was in the hospital?
"Mom, I have to go there right now before Marissa starts feeding Bryson her nonsense," Evelina said, heading straight for the door.
Panic clawed at her chest. The thought of Bryson alone with Marissa made her stomach twist. What if that woman poisoned his mind against her?
"Hold on! I'm coming with you!" Susanna shouted, but Evelina was already gone before she could take another step.
"Foolish child!" Susanna muttered, glaring at the
doorway. Frustration and worry mingled in her eyes as she watched her daughter disappear from view.
"Why is it that you can reach Marissa by phone while I can't, Myrna?" Susanna asked, her attention divided as she messaged someone on WhatsApp to arrange a gown fitting for Evelina.
Caught off guard, Myrna hesitated before replying,"I don't know."
"Well, I'll look it up myself," Susanna said, brushing her hand dismissively as she began typing into the search bar: reasons why a phone call didn't go through.
While Susanna was preoccupied, Myrna took the opportunity to slip away toward the kitchen-but she barely made it past the doorway before Becky grabbed her by the arm.
"You nearly gave me a heart attack!" Myrna hissed, glaring at her. Becky darted a glance toward the living room before whispering, "Tell me what's happening.Wasn't Mr. Hardy supposed to be engaged to Marissa? How did it turn into Evelina all of a sudden?" Knowing a little more than Becky, Myrna leaned in and murmured, "Evelina is actually the real daughter of the Fletcher family. Marissa isn't related to them by blood at all."
"Ah, that explains everything," Becky said with a nod, her expression brightening with sudden clarity.
"As I thought, that insolent girl actually had the nerve to block my number!" Susanna's temper flared as she scrolled through the search results on her phone.
Explanations like poor signal and unpaid bills flashed across the screen, but she dismissed them with a scoff.
She believed the reason was that Marissa had blocked her.
"Damn it!" Susanna shouted, her voice echoing through the room. In a blind fury, she swept the table clean with one arm, sending papers and trinkets flying, then kicked the chair over with a loud crack.
Every servant within earshot froze. One by one, they shrank into corners, holding their breath and praying she wouldn't notice them.
When the chaos settled, Susanna's chest rose and fell sharply. She fixed her gaze on the phone screen, her expression darkening. A bitter laugh escaped her lips as she muttered, "Now that she's chosen to turn her back on me, then she'll have no one to blame when I strike back."
Becky's stomach tightened at the sight of Susanna's wicked grin. A chill ran down her spine, and for a fleeting moment, she nearly grabbed her phone to warn Marissa right then and there, only stopping herself because Myrna was standing nearby.
Without wasting another second, Susanna dialed Phil's number.
The moment the call went through, her tone shifted into one of utter despair. Tears streamed down her cheeks as she said, "Darling, you won't believe what just happened. I tried calling Marissa, and she's blocked me completely... All I did was tell her not to fight with Evelina over Bryson, and she cast aside all the affection l've given her through the years! It hurts so much, darling. How could she treat me this way? After everything Evelina has suffered before coming home, is it so wrong that l show her a little more care?"
