Chapter 43
Chapter43 Evelina Is The Only Daughter Of The Fletcher Family
Evelina cleared her throat awkwardly, forcing out a couple of coughs. "I probably caught a chill." have Becky bring you some medicine,"Susanna replied. Without hesitation, she grabbed her phone from the vanity. The moment the line connected, she instructed, "Bring up the cold medicine."
When Susanna hung up, Evelina smoothly circled back to the topic she'd been eager to bring up. "I asked one of the servants to brew Bryson's herbal remedies, but she said we're out of the last batch and haven't gotten any more. Mom, did Marissa ever mention where she got herbal medicines from?" Even though Evelina had already married Bryson and no longer saw Marissa as a threat, she still didn't want her returning to the Fletcher family.
Ever since Marissa had taken over Bryson's care, both the Fletcher and Hardy families had come to rely on her completely, treating it like her permanent duty. But with Marissa gone, Evelina panicked when one of the Hardy servants asked her for Bryson's herbal medicines. She almost blurted out something she shouldn't have.
Susanna, who rarely concerned herself with such details, had no clue where Marissa sourced the herbal medicines. She'd never cared enough to ask.
"Becky should know," Susanna said casually."When Marissa was too busy, Becky used to help her with that. You can ask her later."
"Thanks, Mom!" Evelina said cheerfully, planting a quick kiss on Susanna's cheek. "Your skin looks amazing."
"Marissa likely left some of her skincare products behind. Come on, I'll take you to pick a few to use."
Using Marissa's leftover skincare?
Evelina's smile instantly froze. Anger flashed across her face, and she shot Susanna a resentful look.
Keeping her expression stiff, she stayed quiet.
Susanna, however, didn't notice her irritation and kept praising Marissa's products. "I don't know where she got them, but they're even better than the big brands. They smell herbal and don't cause any allergic reactions. Since you're about her age, what she used should be perfect for you too."
Evelina barely heard a word. Her mind was spinning with doubts.
Had Phil and Susanna ever truly cared about her, or had it all been a lie?
"Mom, don't bother. The skincare products Bryson ordered for me work fine," Evelina said, quickly stopping Susanna before she could open the door to Marissa's room.
Susanna opened her mouth to respond, but Evelina's phone rang, and she answered right away."I'm at my parents' house. Bryson's medicine is finished. No, it's not that I didn't care about him-I've just been busy with the wedding...Hello?"
Before she could finish explaining, Bryson's mother,Jenna Hardy, hung up on her.
"Is that how Jenna usually talks to you?" Susanna asked, her expression turning sour.
The thought that someone would dare speak to her precious daughter rudely filled her with indignation.
"Why didn't you tell me earlier?" she demanded, grabbing Evelina's hand and pulling her toward the stairs. Fury burned in her eyes as she barked,"We're going to the hospital right now! Someone, get the car ready!"
"Mom!" Evelina exclaimed, startled by her mother's outburst. Was Susanna really about to storm into the hospital and face Jenna head-on?
Maybe she had misinterpreted Susanna's earlier actions; it seemed her mother truly cared for her.
Just then, Becky Castro appeared with a cup of water and some cold medicine. "Mrs. Fletcher, the pills are ready."
Susanna stopped in her tracks and turned back."Take your pills first," she said firmly.
Evelina nodded. Once she took the cold medicine, she looked at Becky. "You were the one helping Marissa prepare my husband's medicine, right?"
Becky froze, clearly confused. "Marissa-I'm so sorry, Evelina! You're married?"
The Fletcher family had kept the wedding drama hidden from everyone.
To the outside world, Marissa was still seen as the bride.
Hearing Becky's words, Evelina's eyes burned with anger as her voice rose, rough and shaking with Family rage. "I'm Evelina, not Marissa!" In a fit of rage, she threw the cup straight at Becky.Startled, Becky instinctively tried to dodge, but Evelina shouted sharply, "How dare you move?"
Becky froze, too scared to react. The cup hit its mark, and the remaining water splashed across her face.
Susanna frowned in confusion. "Why are you so upset all of a sudden?"
"Mom, am I not your and Dad's only daughter?"Evelina's voice cracked, her eyes rimmed red as she looked at Susanna like a wounded child.
Susanna's heart twisted. She turned a cold glare on Becky and said firmly, "From now on, remember this. Evelina is the only daughter of the Fletcher family."
Becky, shaken and unsure what she had done wrong, quickly nodded. "Yes,Mrs. Fletcher."
