Chapter 26
Holley tried to stop Marissa from adding Maxton on WhatsApp.
Marissa, however, had no interest in getting tangled up in whatever messy dynamics existed between the people in this ward. Everything she overheard passed through her mind like background noise.
She never had the slightest intention of sharing her contact with Maxton.
He was nothing like she had imagined, and she was thoroughly unimpressed.
Christy, on the other hand, was barely holding herself together.
She had once wanted to add Maxton on WhatsApp but failed; now, the man she adored had just asked another woman for her WhatsApp number-only to be turned down.
The frustration burned even hotter when Holley casually mentioned that Maxton was a womanizer.
Christy's heart splintered with jealousy.
Maxton, the man who always kept others at arm's length, was now showing rare warmth toward a stranger.
Over the years, Christy had never seen him speak so gently to any woman.
The sight made her jealousy boil over.
Every small motion Marissa made, especially the unhurried way she slipped her phone back into her pocket, felt deliberate to Christy, as if she was toying with him.
No, she couldn't allow them to connect!
Then, suddenly, a memory struck her.
If Maxton ever discovered that Marissa was actually Dr.Moore, she would lose her chance with him.
That couldn't happen.
"Dr. Quinn, Dr. Wallace." Christy compelled herself to stifle her genuine thoughts, mustering a forced grin. "I believe I overheard a nurse mention she is not from our hospital. The fifth level remains sealed off. How exactly did she gain access?"
Before Marissa could reply, Christy pivoted toward the nurse and instructed, "Proceed to notify the Curtis family to kick her out at once. She undoubtedly harbors ill intentions toward them!"
Christy's singular aim centered on eliminating Marissa from the scenario, guaranteeing no additional interactions with Maxton. She disregarded the potential repercussions of her presumptions proving wrong, particularly concerning a young woman.
"I suspect you're merely envious of her!" Holley experienced a wave of assurance upon noting Marissa's refusal to add Maxton to her contacts."Maxton, what is your view on my proposal? You ought to fire Dr. Griffin! She is incompetent and vindictive."
Holley persisted in her denunciations, her utterances cascading ceaselessly.
Marissa pondered how to respond to Holley's offer.Actually, she harbored no plans to join Harmony Hospital.
"Are you truly not from our hospital?" Carla hesitated to relinquish a promising prospect, desiring to retain her within their establishment.
"No," Marissa affirmed, averting her gaze to temper Carla's enthusiasm.
Carla exhaled profoundly, abstaining from hindrance, opting instead to counsel Christy. "Enough, the request stemmed from the patient's family member. You should not hold her accountable for it."
"Auntie!" Christy's eyes moistened, teetering on the
brink of weeping, unprepared for her aunt's allegiance to an outsider.
Carla's countenance hardened. "Maintain appropriate professional demeanor.Address me as Dr. Quinn."
Christy bit her lip hard, her face betraying both anger and embarrassment. Her gaze followed Marissa, unwilling to blink, terrified that she might still exchange contacts with Maxton.
Meanwhile,Maxton, who had just been turned down for the first time in his life, couldn't help but find Marissa fascinating. His eyes lingered on her for a moment longer before he awvkwardly slipped his phone back into his pocket.
Christy, who had pulled out her own phone in hopes of adding Maxton on WhatsApp, froze in place, her expression crumbling.
Across the room, Rita, who had just regained consciousness, looked disoriented. But the moment her eyes landed on Marissa's, her expression shifted dramatically. Panic flashed through her eyes as she exclaimed, "Who are you? is that you,Jessica Thomas?"
Her voice trembled, and she struggled upright, staring at Marissa in disbelief.
Marissa frowned in confusion. Jessica Thomas? Who
was that?
Still, she didn't dwell on it. Instead, she gave Carla a brief nod before walking toward the elevator.
"Rita, she is not Jessica," Holley hurried to say, gently steadying the old woman. "She is about my age-there's no way. You're mistaken. But I have to admit, her medical skills are amazing! You fainted earlier, and even Maxton couldn't wake you up right away, but she did it with her special treatment!"
Her attempt at comfort only made Rita's expression grow darker.
"What's her name?" Rita clamped down on Holley's hand with unyielding force, her tone laced with frost, prompting Holley to crease her brow in discomfort from the vise-like grasp.
Her stare lingered fixatedly on the door.
"I don't know!" Holley shook her head.
Marissa's figure disappeared from their sight. She took the elevator down to the parking level. Since Garry had taken her clothes, she needed to pick up something new to wear before she met with the Curtis family.
Meanwhile, Theodore, who had left a short while earlier, was just pulling his car into the same parking garage.
