Chapter 20
Marissa had merely slipped on a wig and swapped her outfit, leaving her makeup unaltered.
Any other Curtis family member would have instantly recognized her as Marissa, but Holley was completely oblivious.
She failed to link the young doctor before her with Marissa.
"I'm pretty sure we've only just met today," Marissa said, a faint smirk tugging at her lips beneath her mask as she glanced at Holley.
She was amused that Holley still hadn't recognized her and silently pegged her as utterly clueless.
Holley was not convinced, reaching for Marissa's mask while muttering, "You seem so familiar."
"You're confusing me with someone else," Marissa said, deftly blocking Holley's hand. Her voice was icy as she added, "Please don't touch me."
Then she let go of Holley's hand.
"Argh, it hurts," Holley whined, shaking her stinging hand.
From the sidelines, Christy let out a sharp, mocking laugh.
"What, you think this is funny?" Holley's face twisted with fury. In a flash, she grabbed the medical record book from Christy's hand and smacked it across her face, her voice venomous. "Who do you think you are, sneering at me?"
Christy, stunned by Holley's swift aggression, hadn't seen it coming. The medical record book's metal clip grazed her cheek, leaving a stinging red mark.
Holley smirked with glee at the sight. Though petite compared to Christy, her commanding presence loomed large as she kept smacking the medical record book against Christy's face, her wicked grin widening."Go on, laugh! What's stopping you now?"
"You!" Christy fumed, yanking out a compact mirror she carried. Spotting the red streak from her eye to her jaw, her eyes blazed with rage.
"What's the matter? Cat got your tongue?" Holley, a seasoned bully, saw no fault in her actions, her arrogance only growing.
Christy boiled with anger but held back. The Curtis famnily's influence forced her to choke down her fury.
Her fists tightened, aching to lash out, but she restrained herself.
"Give me back the medical record book!" Christy snarled through gritted teeth, her voice thick with loathing, wishing she could rip Holley apart.
"I won't. What are you going to do?" Holley taunted, dangling the medical record book with no intention of giving it back.
Marissa watched Holley's antics, thinking this drama was a pointless drain on her time.
Having unloaded her rage on Christy, Holley felt lighter and found Marissa intriguing, eager to befriend her.
But as she opened her mouth, Marissa turned to leave without a word. "Where are you going?" Holley snapped.
"I've got things to do," Marissa replied coolly.
"How about we swap numbers? I could hook you up with some cute guys next time," HHolley said, pulling a custom pink business card from her purse and offering it with a cheeky smile. "I'm Holley Curtis, and this is my phone number."
Marissa raised an eyebrow at Holley's boldness but, recalling her earlier cruelty toward Christy, shook her head. "Hospital rules forbid us from sharing contacts with patients' families."
"What's the big deal?" Holley pressed, shoving the
card forward.
Marissa eyed her for a moment, then took it with slender fingers.
The light pink card screamed Holley's style.
Christy, feeling ignored, was seething with frustration.
"You were so sure your fancy treatment would wake Mrs. Curtis, but now the nurse is grabbing the kit, and you're slipping away. Scared you'll be exposed as a fraud? You realized you're not up to the task, huh?"Christy spat at Marissa.
Too wary to challenge Holley, Christy had no issue targeting the intern.
"You seem to know best-why don't you handle it?"Marissa said, arms crossed, unfazed by Christy's provocation, recognizing her as someone who preyed on the weak.
"Alright!" Christy hissed.
Marissa leaned against the doorframe, her tone flat."Go for it."
Waking Rita early wasn't complex.
"No. I doubt you can do it," Holley replied, her voice laced with skepticism.
